‘Predatory towing’ is a bane for many carriers, says ATRI

Un rapport de l’American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) released today looks at the causes and measures to be taken by the trucking industry to counter what is commonly called “predatory towing”.

According to ATRI, the most frequent forms of abuse in towing are excessive prices, suffered by 82.7% of trucking companies. Extra service fees also angered 81.8% of carriers forced to do business with unscrupulous towing companies.

A majority of the carriers surveyed also had difficulty recovering their truck or merchandise, had their truck seized for no reason or had a towing experience described as “consensual” when that was not the case.

The study notes that the great variability of rules from one city or region to another favors this type of chaotic situation.

The ATRI report also includes opinions from legal experts who propose strategies that trucking companies can use to identify and avoid cases of predatory towing, properly analyze towing bills and contest them if necessary.

“Predatory towing is a costly issue for both carriers and honest towing companies that has been ignored for too long,” said Shawn R. Brown, vice president of safety at Cargo Transporters.

He said the ATRI report sheds more light on some of these practices and will help fleets, as well as regulatory authorities, combat them.
