US forces in the southern Red Sea destroyed three drones and two missile systems in areas controlled by Yemen‘s Houthi rebels that “posed a clear and imminent threat” to shipping.
According to a statement released by the US Central Command (CENTCOM) on Sunday, the weapons were destroyed “in the last 24 hours” in an area of Yemen controlled by the Houthi insurgents, backed by Iran.
“These systems were determined to pose a clear and imminent threat to U.S. and coalition forces and merchant vessels in the region,” the statement said.
CENTCOM did not release further details on the destruction of the Houthi weapons, but stressed that “these measures were taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer for U.S., coalition and merchant vessels.”
Since mid-November 2023, the Houthis have launched dozens of attacks on merchant ships in the Red and Arabian Seas to exert economic pressure on Israel in retaliation for that country’s war in the Gaza Strip.
Their actions have caused the world’s major shipping companies to modify their routes to avoid transiting this waterway, which handles nearly 15% of global maritime trade, including 8% of grain, 12% of oil and 8% of the world’s liquefied natural gas trade.
