Praga Bohema made its dramatic global screen debut on Amazon Prime Video’s The Grand Tour with enthusiastic commentary from famous TV personalities Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May.
Introduced in season 5 episode 2, The Grand Tour: Eurocrash, the street-legal prototype Bohema hypercar was driven by James May at an airfield in Slovakia and praised for its “incredible” steering, “huge” acceleration and agility. ”, and summed up by Jeremy Clarkson as “a very impressive piece of engineering from the Czechs”.
Shot on one of the hottest European days on record in the summer of 2022, the TV appearance comes just weeks before the €1.3m, 89-race production-spec Praga Bohema launches and the start of manufacturing. of the first customer cars at the Prague factory in the Czech Republic.
Commenting on the Bohema on The Grand Tour, James May said: “He has incredible direction. It doesn’t have a wheel, it has a yoke, but even on a pretty tight track like this, I never need to move my hands from that fourth to three position.
Obviously, it has tremendous acceleration, and they haven’t gone for top speed, they’ve gone for low weight and agility, and it definitely has that. It’s wonderful…it’s just wonderful.”
Meanwhile, fellow presenter Richard Hammond praised the design and styling of the Bohema development prototype, saying: “It’s a tough road to travel, isn’t it? Because it has to look childish and silly, which it is, but it looks done and finished. .”
Mark Harrison, director of sales and marketing at Praga Automotive, said: “Last year they called me asking regarding the R1 race car, at that time we kept the Bohema under wraps.
But when we showed the guys the photos of Bohema, it was obvious to try to make it work with the show: where better to fly the flag of Prague?
Obviously, there are risks involved in providing a hypercar 12 months ahead of production for such a high-profile global extravaganza, but the rewards are certainly worth it: I always wanted James to say “Shit!” regarding a car I’m helping launch!
And the whole team in Prague are huge fans of Top Gear and Grand Tour, so we are very proud to hear Jeremy and Richard praise the engineering and design of the car.”
The episode also paid tribute to Central Europe’s impressive automotive design and engineering heritage.
With 117 years of history, the Praga brand became one of the largest automotive engineering firms in Central Europe in the first half of the 20th century and grew to become one of the “big three” brands in Czechoslovakia, producing more automobiles than Škoda and Tatra together in the 1920s. and ’30s.
With a product line that includes karts, trucks, planes, the R1 race car and now the road-legal Bohema hypercar, Praga remains one of the oldest car brands with an unbroken history in the world.
