According to a recent survey carried out by Dekra Automotive in France on LinkedIn*, 59% of respondents admit that listening to music while driving has an influence on their driving behavior and 53% even believe that it causes a reduction in their alertness.
Music not only arouses emotions, it can also contribute to a breach of the duty of care. According to Dr. Thomas Wagner, traffic psychologist at the international Dekra Group, “music has a clear influence on driving behavior. Indeed, as part of a study, psychologists from the University of Zurich, in Switzerland, found that music listened to in a car lengthens reaction time in the event of a sudden braking situation.
Stronger, faster…
Another proven fact is that drivers can get carried away by fast rhythms by letting themselves be emotionally carried away by the music and will tend to press harder on the accelerator pedal, therefore driving faster. “According to our survey, 73% of respondents say they listen to pop/rock music compared to 12% electro, 7% classical music and 7% disco. The possibilities of letting yourself be carried away by fast rhythms are very real” underlines Karine Bonnet, General Director of Dekra Automotive. “Music is generally a mood-enhancing factor, but it can also reduce alertness while driving. At high volume levels, it can distract attention from traffic events, especially if the songs are associated with personal emotions and memories. Moreover, 14% of respondents recognize that listening to music has an impact on their safety,” she adds.
Experts therefore recommend: “Don’t let your favorite songs drive you too hard while driving, choose a reasonable volume and lower it, especially in more demanding driving situations. Moreover, some modern vehicles already automatically put the music system in silent mode when reversing. »
