Political observer and senior researcher at the Surabaya Survey Center (SSC) Surokim Abdussalam appreciated the attitude of the elected president Prabowo Subianto who called on his supporters or sympathizers to cancel the action at the Constitutional Court (MK) or other places.
According to him, Prabowo’s steps were correct and showed mature and wise political practices. Because it prioritizes harmony so that it provides coolness in the midst of a situation that is heating up again before the reading of the Constitutional Court’s decision.
“I think this is a wise and prudent action and part of the spirit of statesmanship. These days, we can say that we have a deficit of statesmanship, right,” said Surokim, Friday (19/4).
Surokim added that Prabowo’s firmness was to reduce the turmoil of his supporters for the sake of longer-term interests. He said that Prabowo could have allowed the action which was claimed to reach 100,000 people to express their aspirations at the Constitutional Court, but it was considered that this would bring more harm than good.
“It’s not easy when people want to be statesmen, who are more concerned with the interests of the country, more concerned with the interests of the future, more concerned with bigger futuristic interests, we have a deficit now. “So if Pak Prabowo has an attitude like that which is extraordinary, in my opinion it should be appreciated,” he said.
Surokim continued to say that Prabowo’s steps also need to be emulated by presidential candidates or other party elites, providing education to his supporters so that they can maintain harmony and not provoke commotion.

“And elites and other figures should do the same thing to educate the public to provide guidance to the public. “So statesmanship also provides guidance on things that are actually put into practice by him,” he explained.
Surokim said the presidential candidates and other elites need to develop statesmanlike attitudes, not prioritizing their egos or personal or group interests.
“I think they need to develop this attitude of statesmanship so that their level rises. In fact, contestation is not a matter of winning or losing, in fact they will all win, meaning they can win against their own egos,” he said.

“So everyone should be able to move on there and if the practice and spirit of statesmanship is applied, it will actually be much more beneficial, much more meaningful for building the future of this country, in my opinion they should all be at that level,” he added.
Surokim further said that Prabowo also believes that the legal mechanism at the Constitutional Court will provide justice so that there is no need to take actions outside of legal channels.
“This is one of Prabowo’s statesmanship practices, meaning that he is fully aware that he still believes in legal mechanisms and does not need to resort to taking to the streets or even violence,” he explained.

Surokim further said that although the Constitutional Court’s decision could not please all parties, he appealed to the presidential candidates, political party elites and the public to accept with grace whatever decision the Constitutional Court delivered later.
“I think we all have to believe that the Constitutional Court has integrity, so it doesn’t have to use physical pressure, it has to avoid things like that. “So choose more peaceful paths, trust the existing mechanisms and we must realize that decisions will be difficult to make all parties happy,” he explained.
Surokim said that if all parties think far ahead, he believes that everyone will be willing to accept the decision because in essence it is all for the progress of the nation and state by maintaining unity and integrity.
“But if the perspective is changed for the benefit of the future for the benefit of future generations to build public benefit, I think we will find it there. “These interests will be intertwined there, but if the perspective is only about winning and losing, the struggle for power, then the fall will be very difficult to develop the spirit of statesmanship,” he said.
Surokim hopes that the atmosphere will remain conducive and cool. He asked the presidential candidates and elites to encourage their supporters not to take action that will cause division.
“I certainly hope that the elite can develop statesmanship and entrust the legal mechanism to legitimate channels, giving the Constitutional Court the opportunity to decide properly without having to put pressure on it,” he said.
“We must all be able to respect the Constitutional Court’s decision which has gone through various stages. Resolving cases through the courts is an honorable way, but influencing the decision-making processes might make the situation less conducive,” he said. (Z-8)
