With more than 90% of the votes counted for the Indonesian presidential election held on the 14th, current Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto declared victory.

According to Indonesian opinion polling company Indicator Politics, with 91.5% of the votes counted as of 8:30 pm local time, Candidate Prabowo was actually elected with about 57.81% of the votes. This is significantly ahead of rival candidates, former Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo (16.57%) and former Jakarta Governor Anis Baswedan (25.62%).

Prabowo declared victory in the presidential election and said, “This victory is a victory for all Indonesians. “We will form a government for all Indonesian people,” he said, adding, “I am grateful for the results of the ‘quick count’ that allowed us to win the presidency in a single round.”

Prabowo, a former army general, was defeated by incumbent President Joko Widodo in both the 2014 and 2019 presidential elections. Afterwards, he took office as Minister of Defense in Jokowi’s coalition government, and selected Jokowi’s son, Gibran Rakabooming Rakka (37), mayor of Sukarta, as his running mate (vice presidential candidate). In fact, he achieved a status equivalent to that of a ‘ruling party presidential candidate’ and overwhelmed his competitors with an approval rating exceeding 50% throughout the election campaign.

The presidential election in Indonesia, which consists of 16,056 islands, has 205 million voters and about 820,000 polling stations nationwide, so it takes more than a month just to count the votes. For this reason, elections are predicted in advance through sample counting called rapid counting on election day.

Indonesia’s presidential election is held using a runoff election system. If Prabowo achieves the conditions of a majority of valid votes and more than 20% of the votes in more than half of the 33 states, it will end in a close election, but if he falls short, the first and second place candidates will hold a runoff election in June. However, with more than 90% of the votes conducted by six opinion polling companies on this day, Prabowo was found to have received more than 50% of the votes, suggesting that it was effectively a close call.

The results of this presidential election, which was held along with the general and local elections, will be announced on March 20, when the counting ends. The winner will be inaugurated as president for a five-year term in October.
