CHIEF OF PRESIDENTIAL Staff, Moeldoko held a coordination meeting with the Economic Team of President-elect Prabowo Subianto and Vice President-elect Gibran Rakabuming Raka for the 2024-2029 period, chaired by Burhanuddin Abdullah regarding the commitment of the next government in striving for carbon control for sustainable economic growth.

The Indonesian government under President Jokowi has had a number of low-carbon policy formulations in the National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN), and has a commitment to reducing carbon emissions.

“During this government transition period, it is hoped that there will be policies that will accelerate the next leadership,” said Moeldoko in a Coordination Meeting Regarding the Transition to a Green Economy and Carbon Economic Value Policy at the Bina Graha building, Jakarta, Wednesday (14/8), through a statement received today.

The Head of the Economic Team of the President and Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia Elect Prabowo-Gibran for the 2024-2029 Period, Burhanuddin Abdullah, stated that the obligation to fulfill global commitments in reducing carbon emissions is in line with the 8 Asta Cita Missions of the President Elect, in the second pillar, namely to encourage national independence, one of which is through a green economy.

Namely, by forming the Climate Change and Carbon Trade Management Agency (BP3I-TNK) which is tasked with directing, managing, and supervising sustainable climate change control and realizing carbon sovereignty by utilizing blockchain technology.

“Hopefully everyone can coordinate in formulating the agency and revising Presidential Decree 98 of 2021,” said Burhanuddin.

In maintaining the commitment to carbon control, Moeldoko added, the Presidential Staff Office proposed the creation of a Task Force (Satgas) to begin discussions (initiations) on synchronization and transition of the sustainability of the implementation of the policy.

“My suggestion is to first form a task force in order to formulate the body structurally, this is to facilitate the transition of the formation of the body later,” said Moeldoko.

This task force, said Moeldoko, functions to prepare Government Regulations related to the establishment of the Climate Change and Carbon Trade Management Agency (BP3I-TNK) after the Inauguration of the President of the Republic of Indonesia and Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia for the 2024-2029 Period which will be led by Prof. Dr. Laode Kamaluddin as the Economic Team of President-elect Prabowo Subianto and Ishak Saing, Main Expert Staff of the Presidential Staff Office.

Furthermore, Moeldoko said that Indonesia has financing challenges in order to meet the 2030 Emission Reduction target.

It requires financing of Rp 4,000 – Rp 5,000 trillion, and Rp 15,000 trillion to achieve Net Zero Emission in 2060 or sooner.

He added that the potential for carbon trading in Indonesia is very large because it has natural wealth, one of which is the large number of tropical forests and marine and coastal biodiversity (blue carbon) in the form of mangroves, and peatlands which can be a source of carbon absorption and are very important in overcoming the climate crisis.

“Indonesia can capture the huge economic potential of the carbon market and become a major source of state revenue, both through bilateral carbon trading and carbon exchange mechanisms,” explained Moeldoko.

The coordination meeting was attended by Nani Hendiarti, Deputy 4 for Environmental and Forestry Management Coordination of the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment of the Republic of Indonesia, and Laksmi Dhewanthi, Director General of Climate Change Control of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia.

For information, carbon trading in Indonesia is regulated in Presidential Regulation No. 98 of 2021, and Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation 21/2022. Carbon trading through the exchange was inaugurated by President Joko Widodo at the Indonesian Carbon Exchange (IDX Carbon), on September 26, 2023. (Try/P-3)
