DEPUTY Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Nurul Ghufron also commented on the issue of repeating the search process for anti-corruption agency commissioners. According to him, President Prabowo Subianto could maintain the integrity of the KPK if he repeated the process.
“To maintain the independence of the KPK leadership, each period the KPK leadership is proposed and processed by a different President,” said Ghufron at the KPK ACLC Building, South Jakarta, Tuesday (5/11).
Ghfuron explained that this statement was the result of a judicial review (JR) in the lawsuit against the tenure of the KPK leadership at the Constituent Court (MK) which he submitted some time ago.

According to him, the process of searching for a KPK chief must be at the beginning of the President’s term of office to facilitate relations. “So that the relationship doesn’t end twice, it doesn’t continue.”
The KPK leadership will also not be bound by the previous President’s relations if elected by the new Head of State. Therefore, he agreed that it would be ideal for Prabowo to repeat the KPK leadership process.
“Whoever is later promoted by Pak Prabowo in this process will then be released in the following period, so that he does not have a dependent relationship with the old President, to guarantee independence,” said Ghufron.

Even so, Ghufron said his statement did not mean that the 7th President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo (Jokowi), made a mistake in the process of searching for the KPK chief. This is because the previous Head of State also followed the law’s orders to start the selection process.
“Mr Jokowi has been processing the selection committee since June, that’s because it’s based on the law. So, he proceeded,” said Ghufron.
However, the process created by Jokowi was validly repeated by Prabowo. Because, said Ghufron, the baton of leadership has now moved.

“Pak Prabowo, currently, as President, also has the authority to do that, to then annul it. “This is a relay to the new President,” said Ghufron.
Previously, Prabowo Subianto was asked to trace the track records of the ten names of KPK chiefs who had been submitted by Jokowi to the DPR. If Prabowo is not satisfied with these names, it is recommended that the selection process be repeated.
“So we encourage the government, because there are regulations for the government to annul it, to re-create the panel,” said former Corruption Eradication Commission Chairman Abraham Samad at the KPK’s Red and White Building, South Jakarta, Thursday (31/10).

Samad said that Prabowo could repeat the selection of KPK chiefs to ensure that the eradication of corruption in his era went well. The Head of State is considered to have to ensure that the issue of eradicating corruption runs optimally while in charge.
“Re-establish a panel and re-select candidates for KPK leadership. “It’s not too late, if we want to produce credible KPK leaders,” said Samad. (J-2)

**Interview: A Discussion with Nurul Ghufron on KPK Leadership and Independence**
**Interviewer:** Good afternoon, Nurul. Thank you for joining us today. We’ve seen a lot of developments regarding the selection of the leadership of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). Can you share your thoughts on the recent decision by the selection committee to exclude you from the running?
**Nurul Ghufron:** Good afternoon, and thank you for having me. Yes, it’s disappointing to hear that my name was not included after the profile assessment. However, I respect the selection process and understand that it’s crucial for the integrity of the institution.
**Interviewer:** You recently commented on the importance of the President maintaining the independence of KPK leadership. Could you elaborate on why you believe it is essential for the new President, Prabowo Subianto, to repeat the selection process?
**Nurul Ghufron:** Certainly. For the KPK to function freely and effectively, it’s vital that each leadership period is initiated by a new President. This prevents conflicts of interest and ensures that the new leadership isn’t beholden to the previous administration. It’s about safeguarding the independence of the KPK.
**Interviewer:** You mentioned that the new leadership should not have ties to the former President’s administration. How do you see this impacting the integrity of the KPK?
**Nurul Ghufron:** A fresh start is essential. If the KPK leadership is appointed by the new President, it allows them to operate without any dependencies or conflicts from prior administrations. This promotes a strong and independent KPK that can carry out its mandate effectively.
**Interviewer:** How do you feel about the previous selection process under President Joko Widodo? Do you think it significantly hindered KPK’s operations?
**Nurul Ghufron:** I don’t want to suggest that President Jokowi made a mistake; he followed legal guidelines for the selection process which started in June. However, I believe that a new President initiating the KPK leadership search will strengthen the commission’s independence and operational integrity moving forward.
**Interviewer:** Thank you for your insights, Nurul. As the situation unfolds, what do you hope for in the future of the KPK?
**Nurul Ghufron:** I hope for a KPK that is not only independent but also fully committed to its mission of eradicating corruption. The upcoming leadership must embody integrity and be chosen based on their qualifications to ensure they uphold the trust placed in them by the public.
**Interviewer:** Thank you, Nurul, for sharing your valuable perspectives on this important issue. We look forward to seeing how the KPK evolves in the coming months.
**Nurul Ghufron:** Thank you for having me.
