How might Indonesia’s leadership influence discussions on sustainability and economic growth at the APEC Summit?
**Interview with Dr. Maria Santos, Political Analyst on the Significance of APEC 2023**
**Interviewer:** Thank you for joining us today, Dr. Santos. We’re excited to discuss the APEC Summit taking place in San Francisco. Could you elaborate on the significance of this year’s summit?
**Dr. Maria Santos:** Absolutely, thank you for having me! The APEC Summit is crucial because it brings together leaders from 21 member economies to discuss trade and economic issues that impact the Asia-Pacific region. This year’s summit, the first hosted by the United States since 2011, is particularly significant given the heightened tensions in global trade and the ongoing discussions around digital innovation, climate change, and economic recovery post-pandemic.
**Interviewer:** What are some of the key topics that you think will be addressed at the summit?
**Dr. Maria Santos:** We can expect discussions on enhancing trade partnerships, promoting sustainable economic growth, and addressing challenges related to supply chain disruptions. Additionally, there will likely be dialogues on how to navigate the political and economic rivalry between the U.S. and China, especially with leaders from both nations attending.
**Interviewer:** Speaking of attendance, how important is the presence of both President Biden and President Xi at this summit?
**Dr. Maria Santos:** Their presence is significant as it symbolizes the desire of both countries to engage in dialogue despite their tensions. It’s an opportunity for both leaders to address mutual interests in trade and stability in the region. Their discussions could set the tone for bilateral relations moving forward, which is particularly important given the global repercussions of their economic policies.
**Interviewer:** Moving on to President Prabowo Subianto’s upcoming speech at the APEC Summit in Peru, what do you think will be the focus of Indonesia’s message?
**Dr. Maria Santos:** Indonesia is likely to emphasize regional cooperation and the role of emerging economies in driving sustainable development. As the largest economy in Southeast Asia, Indonesia has a pivotal role in promoting inclusive economic growth and stability in the region. Prabowo Subianto may also address food security and environmental sustainability, which are pressing issues at the forefront of APEC discussions.
**Interviewer:** what impact do you believe the outcomes of this summit will have on global trade?
**Dr. Maria Santos:** The outcomes of the APEC Summit can significantly influence global trade policies, especially if member economies can unify their approaches toward trade liberalization and innovation. A cohesive strategy from APEC leaders can foster stability and predictability in trade relations amid uncertainties in other global markets. It could also inspire collective actions on shared challenges, such as climate change and digital transformation.
**Interviewer:** Thank you, Dr. Santos, for sharing your insights on APEC 2023. It will be interesting to see how this summit shapes the future of trade in the Asia-Pacific region.
**Dr. Maria Santos:** Thank you for having me! I’m looking forward to the developments that will arise from this significant gathering of leaders.
