Carmen Fúnez, Deputy Secretary of Territorial Organization of the Popular Party (PP) of Spain, reported that the political coalition is waiting for José Manuel Albares, Minister of Foreign Affairs, to recognize before the Senate Edmundo Gonzalez as the elected candidate in the Venezuelan presidential elections.
“The first thing we hope is that he recognizes the victory of Edmundo González, of María Corina Machado, which was what the majority of Venezuelans voted for, according to what we know from the minutes that have been arriving,” said Fúnez in a press conference, reported Infobae.
Albares will appear before the Senate on Tuesday, August 13. The official will present the Government’s view on the situation in Venezuela, as well as address the expulsion of the Popular Party parliamentarians from the country when they were attending as international observers.
Albares’ request to appear before the Senate’s Ibero-American Affairs Committee was made on July 31, with the aim of “reporting on the Government’s position regarding the latest electoral process in Venezuela.”
The deputy secretary of the PP reiterated that “Spain needs a serious and responsible foreign policy that is identified with the defense of freedom everywhere in the world and also in Venezuela.”
PP demands Zapatero’s statement
The political leader also took the opportunity to demand clarification of the whereabouts of former Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, and what his statement was regarding the July 28 elections as an international observer.
“We know that Zapatero remained silent when our colleagues were expelled and not allowed to be present as electoral observers in Venezuela several weeks ago,” he said.
The PP leader claimed that Albares “must answer questions about Zapatero’s attitude in Venezuela” because, in her opinion, the politician “has been Sánchez’s substitute in all the rallies that the President of the Government could not attend.”
