Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, made a bold prediction in 2017: “Except for the rockets (ironically) everything will be completely electric. After cars, ships are the next easiest task to solve”.
Six years later, the world’s second-richest man may be right regarding the next battery boom for ships. Japanese battery startup PowerX Inc. has unveiled a 140-meter-long electric-powered ship that can transport stored electricity across the ocean. The “battery tanker” will be equipped with batteries the size of 96 containers capable of transporting renewable energy around the world, connecting grids, islands and offshore wind farms. The construction of the ship will be completed by 2025, and sea trials may take place as early as 2026.
“In Japan, for example, a battery-powered tanker will be able to transport energy from regions with high renewable energy supply potential, such as Kyushu and Hokkaido, to high-demand areas in Honshu, or for inter-island energy transmission” explained the company.
PowerX is a battery startup company that aims to change the way the world uses and transfers clean energy.
While most of the world’s energy today is delivered in the form of fossil fuels, PowerX is looking to the future with an electric powered vessel that will deliver clean energy to places where it is needed most.
The startup last year revealed his plans for the first time in the summer, to establish its first gigafactory in Japan, where it manufactures battery storage solutions, including the Hypercharger, an ultra-fast (up to 240 kW) renewable electric car charger. In addition, PowerX will manufacture marine batteries and home batteries.
