Scientists say they have discovered powerful physical links between mind and body that can cause serious mental damage, reports the Daily Mail.
By understanding how our emotions physically affect our bodies, scientists believe they can develop revolutionary new ways to treat serious diseases such as chronic pain and cancer.
Doctors have long known that trauma can damage the heart. In the extreme, with broken heart syndrome for example, or Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, stressful events cause the heart muscles to suddenly weaken, which can be fatal.
Sadness and loss can also cause more pernicious damage, according to a new study by Swedish researchers, who studied the health records of more than two million parents.
Scientists from the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health found that those who had lost a child had more than double the risk of developing atrial fibrillation, where the heart beats erratically and greatly increases the risk of stroke.
“The more we demonstrate that the brain and body communicate, the more effectively we can treat patients by addressing the psychology as well as the physiology of disease,” says Carmine Pariante, professor of biological psychiatry at King’s College London.
