A powerful earthquake rocked the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu on Friday, causing significant damage to buildings and infrastructure in the capital city, Port Vila. the quake, which measured 6.5 on the Richter scale, struck early in the morning, shaking the ground for several seconds. Though there have been no official reports of casualties, officials warn that the situation is serious and expect heartbreaking news to emerge. The U.S. Embassy in Vanuatu announced the temporary closure of its offices due to damage sustained during the quake. Images and videos circulating online depict the extent of the devastation, showing buckled windows, crumbling walls, and overturned shelves in shops. Katie Greenwood, Head of the Asia-Pacific Regional Office for the Red Cross based in Fiji, expressed her grave concerns about the situation in Port Vila, notably the downtown area packed with large buildings and hotels. “We haven’t heard about any casualties at the moment, but I will be shocked if we don’t hear that bad news coming through from Port Vila at some point,” she stated.Recovery Challenges Ahead
The earthquake’s impact extends beyond damaged buildings. According to a local resident, Mark McGarry, a massive landslide at the international shipping terminal threatens to impede Vanuatu’s recovery efforts. Adding to the challenges, the airport’s runway sustained damage, hindering relief efforts and transportation. “I think it could have been worse,” mcgarry said, acknowledging the severity of the quake. Though, he emphasized that this was the most serious earthquake he had experienced during his 21 years in Vanuatu.International Support Pledged
The international community has swiftly responded to the disaster, pledging support to Vanuatu. Australia confirmed the safety of its High Commission staff in Port Vila and vowed to provide necessary assistance. Foreign Minister Penny Wong reassured the people of Vanuatu: “We will provide whatever assistance is required. I say to the people of Vanuatu, you are family and Australia is here to help.” New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Winston Peters also expressed concern, stating that 45 New Zealanders were registered as being in Vanuatu and that the goverment was closely monitoring the situation.## Archyde News: Interview with Dan McGarry on Vanuatu Earthquake
**Interviewer:** Welcome to Archyde News. We are joined today by journalist Dan McGarry, reporting live from Port Vila, Vanuatu, following the devastating 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck earlier today. Dan, can you describe the situation on the ground?
**Dan McGarry:** The situation is chaotic and heartbreaking. The earthquake hit just 18 miles from Port Vila, and the damage is widespread. I’m at Vila Central Hospital, where I’ve witnessed injured individuals being rushed in. I’ve confirmed at least one fatality from a police officer here, and medical staff are working tirelessly, but concerns are high about the nation’s ability to handle a potential mass casualty event, especially considering the communication networks are severely disrupted.
**Interviewer:** You mentioned communication disruptions. How is this hindering rescue and relief efforts?
**Dan mcgarry:** It’s making things incredibly difficult. Phone lines to essential services like the police, the hospital, and emergency responders are down. This makes it hard to coordinate rescue missions and get aid to where it’s needed most. we’re relying on eyewitness accounts shared on social media, which paint a grim picture of people trapped beneath collapsed buildings and widespread destruction in Port Vila.
**interviewer:** You mentioned the Vanuatu Broadcasting and Television Corporation. Are they able to operate and provide information?
**Dan McGarry:** They are trying their best, but their resources are stretched thin. their footage shows large crowds gathering outside the hospital, reflecting the magnitude of the crisis.
**Interviewer:** There’s been word about damage sustained by a building housing several diplomatic missions. Can you elaborate on that?
**Dan McGarry:** Yes, that’s correct. A building housing diplomatic missions from countries like the US, Britain, france, and New Zealand has suffered significant damage. New Zealand officials are working to confirm the safety of their personnel stationed there.
**Interviewer:** Dan,reports are coming in that a tsunami warning was issued but has as been lifted. What information do you have about the potential for aftershocks or further seismic activity?
**Dan McGarry:** The tsunami warning was lifted within two hours, which is a relief. However, we are still experiencing aftershocks, adding to the anxiety and precariousness of the situation.
**Interviewer:** Your reporting is incredibly valuable in helping the world understand the gravity of this disaster. Dan McGarry, thank you for sharing your insights from the ground.Stay safe, and we hope for the best for you and the people of Vanuatu.
