MIAMI – Cuban Jorge Soler spent the entire offseason recovering from his back problems, hoping to have a year like the one he is having in 2023.
Soler became the first Marlin in six years to reach the 30-homer mark in a season Tuesday, in the eventual Miami loss to Astros 6-5 at the loandepot park.
The last club players to have reached that number were Giancarlo Stanton (who finished with 59) and Marcell Ozuna (37) in 2017. Soler is the 13th Marlin in history to reach 30.
“Mainly, staying healthy was the goal,” Soler said. “I think in an interview earlier in the season, I said I was going to hit a lot of home runs. I’m very, very happy about that, and staying healthy has been one of the best things.”
Although Miami remains the third-fewest-homing team in the majors, the lineup is starting to show more power of late. It is something that would be more than welcome for a club that is in the middle of the fight for the postseason.
Since the start of 2017, Stanton (who has been with the Yankees six seasons now) has the most home runs by a Marlin (59) during that span. Jazz Chisholm Jr. is fifth with 45, while Soler is seventh with 43.
