Agricultural and livestock production has been compromised in recent months by repeated power outages in Mérida. In addition, the uncontrolled entry of food from Colombia has had an impact on the low commercialization of agricultural production in the Andean entity.
«The situation is worrying because (the electric service) is an instrument (with which) commerce and the quality of life of citizens move“, said the mayor of the municipality Julio César Salas (Arapuey), Gregorio Peña to Union Radio.
Residents of the area report that the electricity supply fails for four hours every day and sometimes the blackout is repeated. The mayor recalled that the region is a producer of milk and cheese, as well as blackberries, the latter of which is the main producer in the country.
Peña added that the problem not only affects the municipalities located in the Pan-American Axis, but also causes unrest in areas such as El Páramo, the towns in the south and the state capital itself.
Agriculture is one of the most important economic activities in Mérida, one of the Andean states characterized by having a climate that has favored agricultural production, which supplies much of the country’s demand.
However, these activities have declined in their development, as has the third economic strength of the entity, which is university life, all due to the structural crisis that the country is going through.
