At the time of this writing, only 16 000 clients are still without electricity in Montreal. These breakdowns were caused by an “equipment failure”, it is said. According to the state-owned company, the blackouts occurred following a tripping of a protection mechanism on one of the high-voltage transmission lines.

The Montérégie was also affected by the blackouts. Around 4 p.m., 17,465 customers in the region were without power. The situation has also since improved.

Reached by Noovo Info, the spokesperson for Hydro-Québec, Francis Labbé, mentioned that the outages were more located between the island of Laval and the west of the island of Montreal.

Hydro-Quebec subsequently indicated via Twitter that “the voltage recovery on the affected high-voltage line is in progress”.

“We will soon be able to begin restoring service in the affected neighborhoods. The majority of affected customers should be back in service by late afternoon or early evening. The analysis is continuing to find out the exact cause of the trigger,” the state-owned company announced.

“It could go quite quickly once we can start all that,” added Mr. Labbé.

“Reduce your heat risks. Organize your outdoor activities during the cooler hours of the day.

Due to this major outage, the Montréal–Trudeau airport is also affected.
