2023-11-22 18:48:00

Avell sent the Storm It was the best performing notebook I’ve ever tested, but is it worth paying 20 thousand reais? Let’s analyze it.

Avell Storm X 4080

Avell Storm X 4080

Avell makes the Storm X 4080 in three versions, I will describe the one sent for us to test and below I will highlight the differences between them. The version we received has a Core i7 13700HX Raptor Lake, has two graphics cards, the integrated Intel UHD Graphics and the dedicated GeForce RTX 4080 12GB GDDR6 card.

There are 16GB of 4800MHz DDR5 RAM, it supports up to 64GB, if you buy two 32GB sticks, that is, it has two RAM memory slots. In terms of internal storage, we have 1 480GB PCIE NVMe installed, but it has two storage slots, which can be connected in RAID 0/1.

Avell Storm X rear inputs

The ports, there are 2 USB A 3.1 and 1 USB A 3.2, 1 USB C TBT4. It has 1 HDMI 2.1, 1 10/100/1000/2500 NETWORK input and 1 2nd generation AVELL ICE MOD connection, this space is for installing an external water cooler.

Connection for external cooling (AVELL ICE MOD)

In Wi-Fi, it has an Intel AX201 network card with 2.4 and 5GHz bands, in addition to Bluetooth version 5.2. It has an SD/SDHC card reader.

Performance

Performance is the floor of the Storm X 4080. Equipped with the Core i7 13700HX Raptor Lake processor, GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card.

Baldur’s Gate

In performance tests, we noticed that in Baldur’s Gate, the notebook achieved an average of 88 FPS, with a 1% Low of 28 FPS, at a resolution of 2560 x 1600 in Ultra mode, without the need to activate DLSS.

CyberPunk 2077

For more intensive games, like CyberPunk 2077, the Avell Storm X 4080 maintained an average of 79 FPS, with a 1% Low of 50 FPS. This was achieved at a resolution of 2560 x 1600, using the RTX ULTRA configuration and DLSS set to Quality.

Dirt 2

In the case of Dirt 2, the notebook delivered an impressive average of 143 FPS, with a Low 1% of 80 FPS. This was achieved at a resolution of 2560 x 1600, in Ultra mode, without using DLSS.

Lords of the Fallen

Lords of the Fallen also demonstrated the robustness of the Avell Storm X 4080, reaching an average of 92 FPS, with a 1% Low of 52 FPS. The configuration used was 2560 x 1600 in Ultra mode, with DLSS activated in the Quality option.

These results show that the Avell Storm X 4080 can provide an excellent gaming experience, with consistent performance even in complex scenarios with many battles and graphics.

Cooling

Look at these cooling units, I’ve tested them since the A70 Liv, which heated up a lot in the upper area of the keyboard, today Avell seems to have improved the system and it no longer heats up as much. It is bearable to type on the notebook without warming your wrists.

Body for Notebook

Body for Notebook

The screen is 17″ with WQXGA resolution, that is, 2560×1600, has a frequency of 240Hz and a response time of 9ms, a gaming monitor with a contrast of 1000:1.

A higher resolution on a medium-sized screen provides a crisp viewing experience no matter what activity you’re doing on your laptop. The same applies to the high refresh rate of 240 Hz. Regardless of your task, you will constantly enjoy the clarity and fluidity of this screen.

Congratulations to Avell, the Storm X screen is perfect in every aspect!

Keyboard

Avell Storm X Keyboard

The keyboard is mechanical, that’s right, a mechanical keyboard on a notebook. The switches are from Chery MX. One problem I found is that not all the keys are mechanical, the NUMPAD part is membrane. It’s easy to feel the difference between the tactile sensation of the two, what terrifies me is the idea of reducing costs on something so insignificant. All keys should be mechanical.

As the alphabetical set is mechanical, I do not recommend working with it in a closed office, as the keys are noisy.

Touchpad

Its touchpad is huge, something I really liked. It is divided into two areas, left and right side. You can disable one or both sides as it suits you best for your personal use. I thought the idea was fantastic, we are often typing and our hand is on top of the touchpad, especially the right hand, so you just turn off the right side and that’s it. The touch is perfect, functional and tactile, the way a touchpad should be.

Storm X’s problems

Battery

One of the weak points of a gaming notebook is its battery. It has 4 cells that hold 62.32W/h, or 4100mAh. To keep the notebook on for everyday tasks such as writing and browsing social media, it is necessary to activate energy saving mode and even then I was never able to leave the notebook on for 3 hours. For games or more demanding activities such as simple video editing using capcut it does not reach 2 hours on.

The loader/source size

The charger to compensate is a giant 280W power source to touch this VGA and processor. The power supply alone weighs 892g, proving that mobility is not its strong point either.

Mobility and Weight

Buying a gaming notebook doesn’t mean you’ll be able to take it back and forth as easily as you can with a work notebook. It’s big, clumsy and heavy, a real mess.

Integrated graph

One of the points we struggled with when testing was the choice of graphics card due to applications and games. Most of the time the option to choose is the integrated card, which meant we always had to configure the application to open using the dedicated VGA.

This is probably more of a Windows problem than just a notebook problem, but be aware that if you purchase it you may experience these fears and you will need to configure the game.

Price

The price is one of, let’s say, problems with the Storm X 4080. It starts at R$19,999 on PIX. That’s exactly what you thought, it’s 20 thousand reais on a gaming notebook. But is this price expensive? Let’s look at comparing the components to PC hardware – I know they’re different, but look at this as a comparison.

The RTX 4080 is currently costing 8000 reais, the 13 generation Intel i7 processor, in version 13700, is costing 2700 reais. Memory is cheap, 16GB DDR5 is in the range of 350 reais, the same happens with the 480GB NvMe storage which is in the range of 200 reais. Okay, we still have a gaming keyboard that you can buy for around 300 reais with similar switches, but what regarding the monitor? 17 inch 240Hz monitor. It’s difficult to find in this size, so we went for a 24.5-inch one for 1400 reais and to top it off we have a 1000W power supply that costs around 800 reais.

Did you write everything down? Let’s do the calculations 8000 + 2700 + 350 + 200 + 300 + 1400 + 800. With 13,750 reais you can build a PC with the same components that the notebook has. We won’t have the mobility of a notebook, no, but even so the price is well below the 20,000 charged on Avell, so to answer the previous question, yes it is expensive.

Conclusion

Avell Storm X 4080

Pros Top of the line processor Excellent graphics card DDR5 RAM memory Standard mechanical notebook keyboard Beautiful and elegant design Perfect screen

The Avell Storm X 4080 stands out as one of the best gaming notebooks out there, it was certainly the most powerful we’ve ever tested. State-of-the-art components, high resolution screen and refresh rate. The Storm X 4080 technical sheet reveals robustness and good connectivity options.

Performance in gaming tests, such as Baldur’s Gate, CyberPunk 2077, Dirt 2, and Lords of the Fallen, demonstrate this notebook’s ability to handle demanding tasks and deliver a smooth and consistent gaming experience.

However, some points deserve attention. The battery, with limited capacity, is a challenge for those looking for mobility, and the considerable weight of the notebook restricts its portability. The issue of the integrated graphics card can cause inconvenience when configuring applications.

Finally, the price of the Avell Storm X 4080, starting at R$19,999, is a critical aspect to consider. Although the components are of high quality, comparison with the cost of assembling a PC with similar specifications suggests that the mobility offered by the notebook comes at a considerable price.
