With the arrival of general manager Brad Treliving, the Toronto Maple Leafs should also change their face on the ice a bit and a few names have already been mentioned as to plausible departures.
The Daily Faceoff hockey expert Frank Seravalli believes that fans of the Ontario team can prepare to say goodbye to forwards Ryan O’Reilly and Michael Bunting, two men who were previously acquired by former GM Kyle Dubas, now president of hockey operations for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
“Regarding Ryan O’Reilly, I don’t know why people insist on asking otherwise. I said it when the trade was made: there was no chance he would sign another contract in Toronto, the journalist commented on the podcast Leafs Morning Take. As for Michael Bunting, he’s another Zach Hyman. They would like to pay for it, but they do not have sufficient means.
O’Reilly made his way to Queen City in February in a trade involving the St. Louis Blues and the Minnesota Wild. He totaled 30 points in 53 games last season, in addition to three goals and six assists in 11 playoff games. The veteran is expected to test the unrestricted free agent market following completing a seven-year, $52.5 million deal.
As for Bunting, 27 and a candidate for the Calder Trophy in 2021-2022, he amassed 23 goals and 26 assists for 49 points in 82 games of the most recent regular season, but was limited to two points in seven parts of the series. He has received $950,000 for each of the past two years and will also be eligible for full autonomy on July 1.
