Potential cyclone heads to the Antilles and could cause rain in part of Venezuela

A tropical wave was identified as potential cyclone number five and its path is heading towards the Lesser and Greater Antilles, the disturbance could cause rains in part of Venezuela.

The tropical wave registered a 90% probability of evolving into a tropical depression on Monday morning, August 12. Meteorologist Luis Vargas explained on his X account that the potential cyclone does not represent a risk of impact for Venezuela. However, he indicated that it could produce moderate to heavy rains progressively from the east to the center and west of the country in the next 48 hours.

“It has maximum sustained winds of 45 km/h and is located 845 km east-southeast of Puerto Rico,” Vargas detailed in X.

The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Name) indicated that in the coming hours rain or showers with electrical discharges of greater intensity and frequency are expected in Amazonas, southern Bolívar, Guayana Esequiba, eastern Sucre, Monagas, Miranda, Carabobo, Apure, Barinas, Zulia and the Venezuelan Andes.

What does the US National Hurricane Center say?

The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported that the storm is expected to become a tropical storm before or around the time it reaches the Leeward Islands in the northeastern Caribbean Sea, where tropical storm warnings are in effect.

The agency explained that tropical cyclone conditions are expected to begin on Tuesday, August 13 in the Leeward Islands. However, it added that from Monday night, August 12, until Wednesday, August 14, there will be heavy rains in the islands, with the possibility of flash flooding and landslides.

The NHC also issued a tropical storm warning for Puerto Rico and its nearby islands. The US agency said flooding and landslides could also occur on the island from August 13 to 15.

The agency said new alerts may be issued for the northeastern Caribbean in the coming hours.
