“Potential Canadiens Acquisition Targets: Analysis and Updates from The Athletic”

I have the impression that whenever there is talk of a potential acquisition of the Canadiens, whether in the draft, by trade or in the free agent market, Kent Hughes knows him.

I even wonder if it is an impression or just reality. Brief.

The Athletic has published a list of 5 players who could interest the Habs this summer, in light of what has happened in the playoffs so far.

These include striker Josh Bailey and defenders Alex Goligoski and Sean Walker. Marc-Antoine Godin also talks about Alexis Lafrenière, but from a perspective where he dissects why it is not very plausible.

First on the list is young Avalanche forward Alex Newhook. The 22-year-old who was drafted from the BCHL finds himself in a similar situation to Kirby Dach last summer – he’s just not reaching the next level with his team.

Nonetheless, the sixteenth overall pick in 2019 (one spot behind Cole Caufield) scored 13 and 14 goals in his first two NHL seasons, for totals of 33 points in 71 games and 30 points in 82 games.

In the playoffs, he only played a little over 9 minutes per game… And obviously, Kent Hughes knows him very well, Newhook being one of his son’s best friends.

A good target for the Canadian? Certainly, it is interesting, and the link is easy to make between the two clans.

However, you also have to consider the prospect of the Avalanche, who might want to try to give him a bigger role if they were to lose JT Compher and/or Lars Eller.

Would the choice of the Panthers be a good enough bait to start discussions? The future could tell us, if there is indeed interest during the summer season.
