It’s waiting in uncertainty for the organizers and the 90 competitors entered in the Mini-Transat 2023. Due to weather conditions off Cape Finisterre, the start of the race scheduled for this Sunday, September 24 at 2 p.m. is postponed and considered, perhaps, Monday September 25, 2023 in the followingnoon. The event takes place between Les Sables d’Olonne (Vendée) and Saint-François in Guadeloupe.

After the postponement of the start of the first stage of La Boulangère Mini Transat due to very bad weather conditions, the Race Direction submitted an option which it is currently studying to the 90 sailors competing during the briefing which took place held this Saturday at 5 p.m., at the town hall of Les Sables d’Olonne.

In the current conditions the competitors will be faced with very difficult sailing conditions off Cape Finisterre and in particular on Wednesday September 27 (29 knots of average wind with gusts to 40 in rough seas).

Thus, a window might be exploited on Monday, with a departure in the middle of the followingnoon and, moreover, the addition of two way-points in the south of the Bay of Biscay. The goal: to force the riders to curve their trajectories in order to take advantage of more manageable conditions, in particular when overflowing the northwest tip of the Iberian Peninsula, a passage that is often delicate due to a Venturi effect.

With this proposal, the most forward competitors in the fleet would have to deal with an average wind of around twenty knots and gusts of 28. A wind which should clearly lose intensity and even become rather weak for the latecomers.

Christian Dumard, the weather consultant for the race.

This possibility will be confirmed or not on Sunday morning (September 24) upon reading the latest weather files.

The event takes place between Les Sables d’Olonne (Vendée) and Saint-François in Guadeloupe, solo without assistance and on 6.50 meter sailboats.
