While it was to take place on February 1, 2024, the increase in the price of milk will be postponed until May 1, 2024.

It was the dairy producers who requested a postponement of the increase to give consumers a break.

This change comes after several successive increases in the price of milk, said a specialist in the food industry.

“We were talking about increases of 8.4% and 2.5%. With the accumulation of increases, I think consumers needed a break, plus we delayed the increase by three months […] it’s still quite reasonable,” says Sylvain Charlebois, working at Dalhousie University.

“The increases are quite modest at the retail level.”

The expert emphasizes that dairy products, since February 2022, have experienced price increases of less than 10%.

He adds that Quebec is the only jurisdiction in the country that regulates the retail price of milk “with a ceiling price and a floor price.”

These amounts will be known in the coming months.
