Users of smartphone data plans – popularly called “postpaid” – are already the majority in Brazil, according to a survey carried out by the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel).
According to the numbers released by the agency, the volume of subscribers to the most basic postpaid plans exceeded by 100 thousand those who prefer to load credits in advance – specifically, there are 107.2 million for the first, and 107.1 million for the second. It is the first time in the history of the national sector that this has happened.
It is important to highlight, first of all, that these numbers only include “human plans” – that is, a person who purchased the subscription – and business plans are excluded from the account (these also have their own number, however: 214.3 million of activations confirmed in February).
Anatel’s numbers were also broken down by operator, with Claro increasing its volume of postpaid customers (245 thousand customers in February, 37 million in total) and TIM remaining the only one with a prepaid majority (33.3 million consolidated). However, the agency highlighted that even the Italian operator had greater growth in lines with monthly fees: 156 thousand activations in February.
Finally, Vivo maintained its leadership in customer volume, with 235 thousand postpaid activations in February (46.4 million consolidated users) versus 37 million “with credit” lines.
The total numbers, however, point to a retraction in the Brazilian mobile phone market, which had 397 thousand new total activations. For comparison purposes, in January – just one month earlier – this number was 663 thousand.
Anatel also indicates an increase in 5G plans, with 1.1 million new connections registered in February (22.7 million total accesses) – an increase of 5.3% in the month. Once once more, Vivo led this growth, with 428 thousand new activations, compared to 409 thousand from Claro and 259 thousand from TIM.
