Monday, January 1, many of the people we met in the streets of Paris were of the same opinion: “Luckily the holidays are over”. The reasons, however, are very different.

Some admit it, it had to stop in order to spare their stomach. This is the case for Gilles: “We indulged in gluttony and alcohol abuse a little, he confides. So the body needs to become a little healthier again.”

Moreover, he is convinced, “we must be able to re-appreciate later this new excess of gluttony and pleasure. If we were always 100% in pleasure, we would no longer notice this state of fullness”.

During each holiday season, we generally eat a lot and also go out a lot. As a result, Mélanie affirms: “We’re still happy that it’s over so we can rest. We see a lot of people, a lot of family, we have to go out. I just want to sleep.”

Rest after an intense period for traders

Rest is also on the agenda for Armelle, a ready-to-wear retailer for whom the pace has been intense in recent weeks. “These are periods which are still quite heavy and tiring, she answers. So, I can’t wait for this to be over and for us to move on.”

At 72, Elisabeth lives alone but on January 1st, she goes to a restaurant to celebrate the New Year with her son. She is obviously delighted with this moment, but is also not unhappy that the holidays are over. “Already because it’s still commercial like holidays, she laments. We always do things a little formatted, with the family and the children, but not everyone is in the same conditions. And then we already hear about it weeks before.”

While walking with her family on the banks of the Seine, Nicole has a smile on her face because yes, today she is happy. “I’m happy that this period is passing to start something new. In my head, it’s psychological, it’s like that. It’s the new year that’s starting and it’s full of new projects. These are the beautiful days that will return. That’s full of hope”. In other words, the start of a new life, according to Nicole.
