After the defeat once morest Japan (2:4), Kuntz personally criticized his players, which led those responsible in the Turkish Football Association around President Mehmet Büyükekşi to terminate the contract with the German coach, according to “DHA”.
According to Büyükekşi’s statement, “Kuntz shot himself in the foot,” the news agency quoted the president as saying.
Kuntz himself was apparently told by telephone that he was no longer allowed to stand on the sidelines of the Turkish national team. The official announcement should then follow on Tuesday evening.
So far only Stefan Kuntz has been informed, while his assistants around Kenan Koçak have not yet received any information regarding what will happen to them in the future.
Löw possible successor candidate
Various names are being discussed in the Turkish media as possible candidates for Kuntz’s successor.
If those responsible in Turkey want to continue with a foreign coach, former national coach Joachim Löw might come to the fore. At least that’s what the “DHA” reports.
However, following Kuntz’s ultimately unsuccessful commitment, it seems questionable whether a foreign coach will be chosen once more.
Kuntz beckons national coaching position
Other candidates are therefore Sergen Yalçın, Aykut Kocaman, Rıza Çalımbay and Abdullah Avcı. The Turkish coaching legend Fatih Termin, on the other hand, should not be on the list of possible successors for Kuntz.
For Kuntz himself, the next national coaching job might be in store in the near future. The coach, who became European champion twice with the German U21s, is in talks with the German Football Association (DFB) to take over the position of national coach.
