Possible irregularities in Serbia election investigated

Almost a week after the parliamentary elections in Serbia, the public prosecutor’s office asked the police to investigate indications of possible irregularities. The General Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade said on Saturday that the information collected by the police should then be used to determine whether there was enough evidence to initiate an investigation. A video was attached that shows two women talking about buying votes.

President Aleksandar Vucic’s right-wing populist SNS party clearly won in last Sunday’s elections. An international observer mission reported a number of “irregularities” after the election, including cases of violence, vote buying and the stuffing of ballot boxes with forged ballot papers.

In Serbia itself, hundreds of people have protested in front of the election commission headquarters in Belgrade over the past few days. Several opposition MPs went on hunger strike. The electoral commission announced on Wednesday that the vote would be repeated in 30 polling stations on December 30th. No results could have been determined at these polling stations.
