A new study has found that the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) can impair male fertility.

According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP) of Hong Kong on the 21st, researchers at the University of Hong Kong studied the testicles and hormonal changes of hamsters infected with Corona 19 in a paper published in the international scientific journal ‘Clinical Infectious Disease’ on the 20th. The results showed that the virus might impair male reproductive function.

The researchers explained that the hamsters showed a sharp decrease in sperm count and testosterone, the male hormone, following 4 to 7 days of infection with the Corona 19 virus, and the size and weight of the testes also decreased.

He added that rapid inflammation and bleeding of the testicles and tissue necrosis of the spermatogenic organs were also found. According to the researchers, inflammation and tissue necrosis of testicular tissue persisted for 7 to 120 days following infection.

The research team said, “Corona 19 micron mutations and delta mutations have been shown to have similar effects on male reproductive function decline.

In particular, he added, “There was a case in which cell damage and inflammation were found in the testicles as a result of an autopsy of a man who died of COVID-19.”
