“What is happening at VET Uccle? We are confined to the buildings? The training center is blocked”, testifies Isabelle this Tuesday a little before 3 p.m. via the orange button Alert us.
“Possible contamination at the Brussels EFP. Police, Red Cross, firefighters, authorities, etc. on the scene”, warns Emmanuel at 3:30 p.m. Sophie describes a “chemical smell” while Sonja assures that a “toxic gas” would have been released in the establishment located rue de l’Etoile. “We are being held hostage in the school for security. We have not yet received any information that might lead us to believe that it would not be serious”, she testifies.
“It seems that a gas has been released in one of the buildings. Several people who were victims of this gas felt an irritation in their throats. Access to the three buildings has been blocked. No one can enter or leave. More of 4 ambulances are already on the scene”, also explains Jemima. “At 3:30 p.m., we have just been briefed by the police. One or more doctors are on site”, she adds.
Several people taken to hospital
Walter Derieuw, spokesman for the Brussels fire brigade, confirms an intervention in a training center for adults located rue de l’Etoile in Uccle. The establishment was partially evacuated on Tuesday followingnoon, following several people complained of irritation in the eyes and respiratory tract.
The firefighters deployed their “Hazmat” team, which specializes in hazardous products. “About 200 people were evacuated from the school and regarding 30 of them were taken care of by an advanced medical post”, said the fire department spokesman. “Seven other individuals are likely to be taken to hospital for further examinations, although their condition is relatively stable.”
The Marlow police zone (Uccle/Auderghem/Watermael-Boitsfort) has set up a security perimeter around the building, as well as a medical intervention plan. The exact cause of the irritations has not yet been determined.
