harmful to health, the eternal pollutants, or PFAS, are so called because they do not degrade in the environment. Several studies have revealed that they are found in natural waters and in the fish that inhabit them and that we subsequently consume. Some would even be nestled in contact lensesaccording to a US assessment.

As reported The Guardian, des tests made on several major brands including Acuvue, Alcon and Coopervision – sold in France – demonstrated the presence of fluoropolymersorganic fluorine which is by definition a PFAS.

These tests were commissioned by public health blogs Mamavation et Environmental Health News and carried out in a laboratory certified by the Environmental Protection Agency. Each product tests – eighteen types of lentils of contact – contained high levels of organic fluorine.

What risks?

No studying has been conducted on the impact of these PFASs enclosed in the lenses. It is therefore impossible to know whether, in contact with the eyes, they present dangers. In general, these pollutants are accused of being cancer-relatedfetal complications, liver disease and eye diseases. “PFAS are absorbed through the dermis and are highly mobile compounds, so it is possible for the eyes to absorb some level of chemicals, although fluoropolymers are generally a less mobile type of PFAS”add our colleagues from The Guardian.

Intentionally integrated pollutants

These products have been intentionally added to lentils of contact in order to soften them. “They have the properties your eyes want”, told the British newspaper Scott Belcher, a researcher at North Carolina State University and scientific adviser on contact lens testing. In disposable solutions, they allow oxygen to pass through, prevent bacteria from growing and make the lentils “smooth and comfortable”.

Across the Atlantic, brands are not not obliged to specify that they include PFAS in their list of ingredients. In some states, authorities have prohibits the use of these products chemicals in cosmetics, but no law includes contact lenses.
