The performance of Peruvian athletes at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games – where 10 gold, 6 silver and 16 bronze medals were obtained (being the second best participation of the national delegation in this competition) – is the most positive event of the year for 17%, according to a survey by Datum Internacional for El Comercio.
In this regard, Mabel Huertas, journalist and political analyst for 50 + 1, indicated that in the face of the crisis of representation that the country is going through, “athletes who are outside the support of the State” represent the concept of “getting ahead” despite the adversities. And, that is why, she added, it is a positive aspect that a sector of Peruvians highlights.

Political analyst Jeffrey Radzinsky said that this is a year where it is “very difficult” to find positive references and issues. He added that, although Peru has “experience” in going through crises, it is the first time in more than 20 years that the country is in a recession.
“It is not surprising either that insecurity is [el hecho] more negative, we started the year badly and closed it even worse,” he stressed to El Comercio.

Boluarte, the negative character
And although in her assessment for her first year in office, President Boluarte Zegarra stated that her government “has achieved the democratic stability that we so needed in the country” and this achievement is thanks to the “checks and balances” between the powers of the State. , 38% consider her a “negative character” of 2023.
According to the opinion study, carried out for El Comercio, Boluarte is followed by former president Pedro Castillo and the leader of Fuerza Popular, Keiko Fujimori, with 11% and 8%, respectively.

Radzinsky maintained that the rejection of Boluarte Zegarra “is very high” compared to the other politicians who are on the list of negative characters. He added that this is consistent with the high disapproval of the president’s administration, 85%, and the low approval of her, 9%.
“You have to go back 20 years to find [ese nivel de aprobación en un presidente]but 20 years ago the economy began to grow, but currently there is a decline in this matter and crime is advancing, it is a complicated time,” the GFP director told El Comercio.
For her part, Mabel Huertas indicated that the head of state “lives with her back to reality and political and social demands.” She also stressed that within the leadership crises that the country is going through, she would be the one called to step forward. But she has had “many mistakes and little self-criticism.”
“She has also made mistakes that have remained marked in the collective memory, such as when she said that Puno is not Peru, or that we live in peace when that is clearly not the case. This is something that must bother many citizens,” she said.

Below Boluarte, Castillo and Fujimori, Juan Reynoso, former coach of the Peruvian soccer team, appears as a “negative character” with 5%. This is due to the fact that the national team failed to win a single match of the six that were played between last September and November for the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

A complex social scenario facing 2024, by Urpi Torrado
New achievements and positive news are needed to reawaken pride among Peruvians.
We close the year with worrying figures and facing a complex social scenario. If we look beyond the classic questions of popularity and current situation, we find that two-thirds of Peruvians do not recognize any positive character who has stood out in this past year. Likewise, there is a lot of dispersion among the characters mentioned, none stand out, despite the fact that the question is broad and is not limited to the political level. On the contrary, more than half of the population points to a politician among the top three negative characters of the year and the percentage of people who cannot point out a name is significantly reduced. This same trend is observed when we ask regarding the most important events of 2023. The positive ones are associated with sports and gastronomy, while the negative ones are concentrated in politics, the economic crisis and citizen insecurity. It also stands out that a third of citizens do not see any positive events and a similar number cannot mention any.
Although the surveys only measure the temperature of the moment and this is negative, we can read it in terms of the opportunities they mean for 2024. There is space for the construction of new references and the emergence of inspiring leaders. New achievements and positive news are needed to reawaken pride among Peruvians. Likewise, there is openness to change and willingness to support reforms that contribute to building a better future. Finally, the Peruvian bets on his work, his creativity and his drive to get ahead, he plays his game and will continue to play his game for Peru.
