POSCO introduces a four-day week every other week. This is a rare case in the global steel industry, which requires blast furnaces to operate 24 hours a day. As POSCO, the 5th largest business and the largest steel company in Korea, introduces the four-day workweek system, it is expected that POSCO Group affiliates and other steel companies will also be more likely to adopt the four-day workweek system.

According to the industry on the 18th, POSCO decided to implement a four-day workweek every other week for all employees starting from the 22nd. A POSCO official said, “We are considering a plan to work an extra hour on 8 out of 10 days and rest every other Friday.” POSCO employees currently work an average of 40 hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The first holiday is expected to be on the 2nd of next month. Production workers at POSCO Pohang Steel Works and Gwangyang Steel Works will maintain the existing 4-team, 2-shift work system.

POSCO’s labor and management reached an agreement on a four-day workweek every other week during wage and collective negotiations in November last year. At that time, POSCO labor and management negotiated 24 times over a five-month period starting in May of last year over issues such as the four-day workweek.

POSCO employees expect that the implementation of the four-day week will increase productivity as they will be able to efficiently plan their own work and leisure time. As POSCO, the largest company in the POSCO Group, is the first to introduce a four-day workweek, it is expected that the remaining POSCO Group affiliates will also begin discussions on changing the system to a four-day workweek. Furthermore, there are predictions that other steel companies may also consider a four-day workweek system.

Some companies, such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, are already implementing the four-day workweek system once a month. Information technology (IT) companies such as Kakao Games and Toss are also partially adopting the 4-day or 4.5-day workweek system. An official in the steel industry explained, “As POSCO introduces the four-day workweek, there is a greater possibility that other large steel companies will also adopt it.”
