Preemptive response to global demand by securing timely mass production capacity
[인더스트리뉴스 이건오 기자] POSCO Future M is set to secure an additional 46,000 tons of high-nickel cathode material production capacity.
POSCO Future M held a board of directors meeting on the 24th and approved the construction of an additional 46,000-ton high-nickel NCMA cathode material plant in Pohang Yeongilman 4th General Industrial Complex by investing a total of KRW 614.8 billion by 2025. Construction will begin in the second half of this year and will be completed in 2025.
High-nickel NCMA anode materials are manufactured with a nickel content higher than 80%, and demand is rapidly increasing in line with the recent trend of high-performance electric vehicles as they can increase battery capacity and output and extend lifespan.
Currently, POSCO Future M has a total production capacity of 105,000 tons of cathode materials, including the Gwangyang Plant with an annual capacity of 90,000 tons, the Gumi Plant with an annual capacity of 10,000 tons, and the Zhejiang Pohua Plant in Zhejiang Province, China with an annual capacity of 5,000 tons.
With this investment decision, POSCO Future M’s cathode material production capacity will increase to a total of 271,000 tons by 2025.
In particular, in Pohang, in addition to the 30,000-ton annual 1st-phase plant scheduled to be completed in the second half of this year and the 30,000-ton 30,000-ton 2nd-phase plant scheduled to start this month, the 46,000-ton 2nd-phase 2-2 plant approved for investment on the 24th will be completed. It will be transformed into a cathode material production complex with a capacity of 106,000 tons.
In addition, overseas, POSCO Future M is constructing a 30,000 ton annual cathode materials joint plant with General Motors (GM) in Quebec, Canada, and a 30,000 ton annual cathode materials joint plant with Huayou Cobalt in Zhejiang, China. We are building a 10,000 ton plant.
An official from POSCO Future M said, “We plan to achieve a global cathode material production system roadmap of 345,000 tons by 2025 by promoting additional investment.” I will go out,” he said.
