The prime minister resigned this Tuesday amid a corruption investigation.
The president of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, dissolved Parliament and called early elections for next March 10, once the General State Budgets for 2024 have been approved, as confirmed this Thursday, local media report.
The reason for this measure, the politician said, is the resignation of the Portuguese Prime Minister, António Costa, which took place this Tuesday following the Public Ministry carried out a search operation in several government buildings in the framework of an investigation into alleged crimes in the lithium and green hydrogen business.
“Presumption of innocence”
Likewise, he recalled the “long and very demanding years of overcoming the excessive deficit” with Costa at the head of the Government, thanking “the availability to carry out the functions” and highlighting the “respect for the presumption of innocence” in relation to his resignation in the middle of a corruption investigation.
Rebelo de Sousa pointed out that with this he wants to give “greater clarity and a more vigorous course” to the Portuguese country, “giving the people back the floor without dramatizations and without tumors,” by holding early elections.
“I have tried to shorten the time for this decision as much as possible,” stated the president of Portugal, detailing that this “has to do with the process of replacing the governing party” to “elect the representatives of the people.”
