Portugal will have a single ticket until the end of 2023

Used in some Brazilian cities, the single ticket for public transport was expanded to the whole country in Portugal. The idea is that the system is fully integrated between Lisbon and Porto, the two main metropolitan areas in the country, until the end of 2023.

The change should make life easier for residents and tourists alike. Currently, the tickets used in each of the two cities do not “talk” with the equipment installed respectively, that is, those who have a pass or transport ticket from Lisbon cannot use it in Porto, and vice versa.

The investment to carry out the integration between the two systems will be approximately 2.7 million euros and is part of a first stage of a broader project. A 1Bilhete.ptas the ticket platform is called, foresees the unification of applications for the online purchase of tickets and the inclusion of other modalities, such as vehicle sharing (both in the second half of 2024).

“Portugal’s strategy was to expand the existing system in Lisbon to the whole country. Just like it was done here in Rio de Janeiro, where you had Riocard originally only in the capital, which was expanded to other municipalities. In Brazil, it could be done the same way, we could expand our system to the whole country”, evaluates Cassiano Rusycki, Executive Director of Riocard Mais.

According to the Mobility and Transport Institute, an entity similar to the Detran of Brazil, it will also be possible to create national public transport tickets, in addition to the use of bank cards, physical or virtual, for the purchase and acquisition of tickets.

Use not Brazil

Although a possible expansion of the public transport ticketing system for the entire national territory is not on the agenda in the country, Rusycki argues that it is possible to plan for it.

“For this project to be viable, it depends only on political will. We already have an interoperable Electronic Ticketing system in Brazil, capable of serving all modes in different cities and states. All it takes is an expansion project for this system,” he says.

The novelty in Portugal can help to raise the matter with the responsible authorities, but the expansion would not be something so simple, mainly due to the territorial extension of Brazil.

“If it is going to happen, it should be done gradually. In addition to the process necessary for implementing the system, it also needs to be thought about how this migration will be delivered to the population”, concludes Rusycki.
