Portugal recorded a 5.3 magnitude earthquake that was felt in Spain

The simple message is serenity, tranquility, normality. Anyone who goes to Lisbon verifies this and from the information we have from other points in the supposedly affected area it is the same. It is a normal, natural start to the week and there is no reason for concern,” said the head of state.

The quake occurred at around 05:11 local time (one hour behind GMT) at sea, with an epicenter located approximately 60 kilometers west of Sines, a municipality that is about 90 kilometers south of Lisbon, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA).

Portugal recorded an earthquake with several aftershocks

Authorities have ruled out the possibility of a tsunami risk.

According to information provided by the IPMA and the Civil Protection Authority, Rebelo de Sousa confirmed that there was no record of personal or material damage caused by the earthquake. The quake was felt in Spain.

He said that the aftershocks felt so far show a downward trend, moving away from what happened in 1969, in reference to the 7.9 magnitude earthquake in the south of the country that caused several deaths and affected infrastructure 55 years ago.

The national commander of Portugal’s Civil Protection, André Fernandes, explained that the authorities have started a monitoring phase of the situation. However, he said that this earthquake does not meet the criteria to activate the special plans established for this type of incident.

After the earthquake, four aftershocks were felt, one of magnitude 1.2, the second of magnitude 1.1, the third of magnitude 0.9 and the fourth of magnitude 1.

In response to this event, Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel said that this earthquake has allowed for the analysis of several factors, such as the response capacity.
