Portugal continued its streak of victories in the Euro 2024 (2024 European Football Championship) qualifications, setting a record for victory by the largest goal difference even without Cristiano Ronaldo.

Portugal won 9-0 once morest Luxembourg in the 6th match of Group J of the Euro 2024 qualifiers held at the Augarbe Stadium in Aumanciou, Portugal on the 12th (Korean time).

This is Portugal’s record for the largest goal difference win in an A match. The previous records were 8-0 wins over Liechtenstein in 1994 and 1999 and Kuwait in 2003. The result is all the more meaningful because it was achieved without Ronaldo, who has been the center of Portugal’s attack for nearly 20 years. Ronaldo was unable to play on this day due to accumulated warnings in previous matches in the preliminaries.

Gonzalo Hamus, who is expected to be Ronaldo’s replacement, led the way to victory by scoring two of Portugal’s first three goals. Gonzalo Inacio scored the first goal in the 12th minute of the first half by finishing Bruno Fernand’s cross with a header that only changed direction, while Hamus scored an additional goal in the 17th minute with a sharp left-footed grounder from the right side of the goal area. In the 33rd minute of the first half, Hamus beat a defender in the penalty area and fired a shot between the goalkeeper’s legs to make it 3-0.

Portugal, which gained an early lead thanks to Hamus’ performance, continued to score goals. Inacio scored one more goal to end the first half 4-0, and Diogo Jota scored multiple goals in the second half. Ricardo Orta, Fernands and Joao Felix also joined the scoring ranks.

Portugal is on a six-game winning streak in the Euro qualifiers under coach Roberto Martinez, who took office in January this year as the successor to coach Fernando Santos, who resigned following the 2022 Qatar World Cup. In particular, he is showing off his ‘invincible’ performance by scoring 24 goals and not conceding a single goal.

There are only two teams, Portugal and France, that have kept a clean sheet in the Euro qualifiers. However, France’s total score is 11 goals, less than half of Portugal’s.
