Portrait of Russia’s top rocket scientist has just died

Pavel Kamnev, Russia’s top military rocket scientist and the “father” of the powerful Kalibr cruise missile, has died at the age of 86.

Almaz-Antey Corporation, Russia’s leading missile manufacturer, on January 9 announced the departure of Mr. Kamnev.

Pavel Kamnev was born on October 14, 1937 in the city of Makhachkala in the Caspian region, Russia. According to Top War, from a young age, Kamnev was famous for being good at studying and achieving high results in technical subjects.

After graduating from the Moscow Aviation Institute with honors, Kamnev began working at the MI Kalinin machine building in the Sverdlovsk region in 1960. In 1991, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Kamnev became the chief designer of the Novator Design Bureau and in 1996 was appointed to lead the agency with the task of building new missiles for the army.

In 2017, Mr. Kamnev was appointed as Chief Scientific Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Almaz-Antey Aviation and Defense Group, the parent company of Novator Design Bureau. Despite his advanced age, Mr. Kamnev continued to hold this position until the last days of his life.

According to RT, the most famous weapon invented by Kamnev is the Kalibr long-range cruise missile. This is a high-precision strike weapon, commonly used by Russian surface ships, submarines and long-range fighter aircraft.
