Portrait: Jys, a life of fighting against AIDS, for herself and others

Jys is a happy and fulfilled woman, invested for 22 years in the fight once morest HIV/AIDS. It contributes to prevention, to lower the contamination curve. And faced with those who are already HIV positive, like her, this mother affirms that life can go on with the disease.

Jys Lecompte has been an activist for many years with AIDES, the main association for the fight once morest AIDS and viral hepatitis in France and Europe.

It’s been 22 years. I was an activist in France in the Center region and, today, I am an activist in Guadeloupe, since the association was established in 2014 in Basse-Terre and they came to get me, because I knew the archipelago.

Jys has also been HIV positive for 33 years. At the announcement of her state of health, the young woman that she was received a shock. She then isolated herself and lived in fear for a long time, sure of being doomed.

At the time, it was terrible, because we didn’t talk regarding it. So at the time I took a big blow to the head (…).

Contamination can occur at any time and affect everyone, explains Jys, who accidentally contacted the disease. By communicating on this point, it intends to warn the rest of the population.

Me, I was contaminated following the rupture of a condom. So that means I didn’t take any risks, I’m not in the target audience, like prostitutes, drug addicts… I’m really heterosexual. So, that’s to say that it can happen to anyone! We are all concerned !

However, it is possible, a posteriori, to lead a normal life. Jys is living proof of that. She says she is fulfilled and happy, because her life is full. She worked, raised her children and is now retired. A time that she devotes in part to the fight once morest HIV/AIDS.

We have to get the message across. We can live with it. We can live happily! (…)

The difficulty, locally, is that the subject is still silent today.

Here, in the West Indies, it’s really taboo! At AIDES, we did a workshop on the theme of “the secret” and, from there, we managed to ensure that the people who were in this group, who were in a relationship, managed to tell their spouse. , their partner, their family

The struggle of Jys, a fulfilled woman, can be summed up in a few words: warn, accompany, motivate, listen.

Personally, I feel useful. It gives meaning to my life.
