Porto coach Sergio Conceicao accused his counterpart from Arsenal, Mikel Arteta, of insulting his family during the match that brought the two teams together in the round of 16 of the Champions League.
The two managers exchanged conversations following the match, in which the London club won on penalties to qualify for the quarter-finals, as Conceição seemed to rebuke Arteta, and pointed his finger at the Spaniard, as he made his point of view. Arteta responded by shaking his head as he walked away.
Conceição said in Portuguese following the match, “During the match, (Arteta) turned to the bench and in Spanish – this must be the case of the Spanish coaches because it is the same thing that happened with (Pep) Guardiola – he insulted my family… In the end I told him to be careful because whoever insulted him did not He promises with us, and to worry regarding training his team, because because of individualism he has an obligation to do more and do better.”
When asked regarding his conversation with Conceição during his post-match press conference, Arteta only said “no comment,” before leaving the podium.
Conceição has previously made similar allegations regarding other managers.
After losing in the group stage to Manchester City in 2020, Conceição said that Guardiola “talked regarding our country using ugly words,” and that “Guardiola’s position was very annoying.”
After Porto’s loss to Chelsea in the 2021 Champions League quarter-finals, Conceição also said that the then Blues coach, Thomas Tuchel, “insulted” him during the match.
