Portable pump Xiaomi Portable Electric Air Compressor 1S – bike, car, ball?

Hello.

Summer is already knocking on our doors, which means that the farm will need a pump that can pump up the wheels of a scooter or bicycle, perhaps inflate a volleyball or football ball. There are many automatic pumps on the market, but one of the most popular is that from Xiaomi, it is chosen among the first for its price / quality ratio, the model is long called Xiaomi Portable Electric Air Compressor 1S. Usually, there is also a number in brackets, for example, it might look like MJCQB05QJ or MJCQB04QJ. By and large, this is the same model, the higher the number, the older the revision and the newer it is. In theory, you get a fix for certain points, but they are almost invisible, the cost of the devices is plus or minus the same, as well as their capabilities.

They sell such pumps online for the Chinese market, from where they are the cheapest to bring. They do not differ in anything, except for the box and instructions in Chinese. I think that following reading this text, you will not need the instruction itself, especially since it is small and does not describe all the capabilities of the pump.

The package includes a soft case with a pocket, in which the adapter for inflating balls is hidden, there is an adapter for a car nipple on the hose. A fairly massive device, its dimensions are 12.4 x 7.1 x 4.53 cm, weight is 480 grams, excluding the hose and nozzle on it. So we can safely assume that the device weighs a pound.

You can carry it with you in a backpack, but it is better to place it in the car so as not to pull your shoulders when carrying it. The case is made of plastic, although some magnesium alloy or metal alloy is often found in the descriptions. This is not true and an attempt to position the pump higher, taking 1.5-2 times more for it. I came across such a seller on Yandex.Market, as a result, the site returned the difference in cost in the form of points.

The case is strong enough, I didn’t drop the pump, so I can’t say how durable it is. But during operation, the pump crawls along the ground, so the lower edge will wear out. After several times, the scuffs are already visible.

The hose is inserted into the connector, when you remove it, the pump turns on, and you can select the operating mode on the screen, or turn on the pump with the central key. Conveniently, four modes are preset, showing typical values for each item:

  • Bicycle – Inflate up to 45 PSI (pounds per square inch)
  • Ball – up to 8 PSI
  • Motorcycle — up to 2.4 bar
  • Vehicle wheel – up to 2.5 bar

The item’s icon is shown right there, plus you can just enable paging without any settings. The built-in pressure gauge shows the pressure in the tire or ball, which is convenient. Connect the pump, see the pressure and turn it on. When the desired pressure is reached, it will automatically turn off.

The control keys on the front panel are very convenient and simple, there are no mysteries, everything is intuitive. There is a flashlight on the top end, it works in constant backlight mode or can blink. The flashlight is covered by the hose if you haven’t opened it. The main task is to highlight the wheel when pumping. You can’t use it as a flashlight, it’s much brighter on the phone.

A few words regarding the battery, it is built into the case and cannot be removed. It costs two Li-Ion batteries with a capacity of 2000 mAh.

Fast charging is not provided, at the bottom behind the rubber insert there is a USB Type C connector. On average, the battery charges for regarding three hours. The downside is that you can not turn on the power and make the pump work, it does not work during charging. The reason is the strong heat, which can disable it. As a result, the engineers abandoned this option.

The description of the pump on the manufacturer’s website provides ideal data on its operating time. Look in the table for how much a fully charged pump can pump different items.

Let’s look at how the pump copes with pumping up a car tire (18 radius), the tire pressure is 1.5 bar, you need to pump it up to 2.3 bar.

The pump starts to work and 0.1 bar is added in an average of one minute. A total of 2.3 bar is gained in 12-13 minutes. On the street, the body remains quite cold, but the hose warms up noticeably, it becomes scalding. Inflating a car tire is possible, but not the best use case for such a pump. Rather, it is needed to pump up the tires, but if they are constantly lowered, then you are simply tormented to charge the pump. Especially if you have more than one such tire, but several. Often, motorists are faced with the fact that old rims do not provide a snug fit for tires, let air through and the wheel deflates.

For any other application, there are no restrictions: bicycle wheels, balls and the like – all these items can be inflated quickly and efficiently. The pump is noisy (up to 80 dB), its rattling is clearly audible.

The charging indicator is located on the bottom edge, it is bright enough. In operation, white means that the charge is close to maximum, yellow – somewhere in the middle, and red – that the pump is almost empty. Not the most telling indicator, but there is no other. When charging, it flashes white, fully charged, it just burns. Alas, this is not always informative.

Unfortunately, almost never talks regarding how the pump behaves at sub-zero temperatures. I did not use it in a strong minus, but at a temperature of regarding minus one degree, the battery freezes through, the operating time is almost halved. It can be assumed that in severe frost this result will be even worse. Another negative point is the discharge current, if you leave the pump in the car, then following a week a fully charged device will lose part of the charge. Therefore, it is definitely not worth using it as a spare pump for a car, this is not the most convenient and correct way. Of course, if you are not ready to cook on the road for a couple of hours while waiting for it to charge. Imagine, it will lie in the glove box or trunk for several months, and then you will suddenly need it, I think that you will swear. For a car, it’s better to look at models that can work from battery terminals (this is a moot point, many people are shaking over batteries, but I consider them consumables). In a critical situation, such pumps will cope with pumping faster.

But for all other applications, except for pumping car tires, such a pump is ideal or close to it. The price of this pump ranges from 2,600 to 4,500 rubles, but the only difference is where exactly you buy it. I have not seen fakes, the low price is usually for the model for the Chinese market, the price is higher for those intended for foreign markets. Apart from the box and instructions in another language, there are no obvious differences.

The question remains open, what will be the life cycle of such a pump in active use or just storage. The weak point is the hose, with active use it gets very hot, experiences temperature changes. It is twisted, but I did not find such an accessory for sale separately. The other weak point is the battery, but in theory you can disassemble the case and replace these elements. The tip of the adapter is made of brass, so it will be difficult to rip it off.

For home and summer cottages, a good household pump that costs adequately and offers the correct reading of such a device. In this form factor, the model turned out to be successful, despite a number of limitations.
