Port of Dover celebrates the success of the collective plan for summer vacations that sought to reactivate activity following the pandemic. During the period, more than 2 million passengers, 483 thousand cars, 9 thousand buses and 237 thousand goods vehicles were processed, volumes that confirm the terminal as the main commercial and travel gateway from Great Britain to Europe.

He Port of Dover offers the country’s shortest sea crossing to France, three operators and flexibility thanks to 130 daily ferry services. The average processing time at the border was 41 minutes during peak hours and 23 minutes overall.

Among the measures taken were the creation of two additional bus processing stations and the reactivation of two additional ones, to complete nine tourist lanes, seven for buses and two for goods at peak times; share projections hour by hour; work collaboratively with bus customers and ferry operators to distribute demand during peak times; and provide additional facilities, including pet welfare, ahead of border checks.

Commenting on the success of the program, the Port of Dover CEO Doug Bannister stated that “the port community is immensely proud of the enormous planning that was carried out to ensure smooth transit for our passengers this summer, following the return to pre-pandemic numbers and under the current border processing regime. “Dover’s summer plan, put together in collaboration with a wide range of operating partners, finally came to fruition and delivered a fantastic summer season.”

“The scale of planning required to achieve a successful summer here at the Port of Dover in 2023 was immense, but the substantial work carried out with our operational partners paid off. “We would like to thank our ferry operators, DFDS, Irish Ferries and P&O Ferries, National Highways, Kent Police and the entire Kent Resilience partnership, who supported us with traffic management,” he added Emma Ward, Director of Operations at the Port of Dover.
