Despite his criticism of Brunette and to the so-called fourth transformation, Porfirio Munoz Ledo, former president of the Chamber of Deputies, assured that the president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is opening “a new horizon of political representation in Latin America” and stated that “it is obvious” that all Latin America goes to the left.
In a meeting with the media at the Palace of Fine Arts, following attending the tribute for the 125th anniversary of the poet’s birth Carlos Pellicer, the former legislator affirmed that political change is taking place in several countries in the region that have a left-wing president, such as Chile, Peru and Brazil, because “Lula is going to win.”
“I am an enthusiast of what (President López Obrador) is doing, opening a new horizon of political representation in Latin America, a great project because Latin America is going to the left: in Chile, Peru, in Brazil Lula will surely win. Mexico has to get ahead of that time and the president is doing it, I am very enthusiastic and very supportive of what López Obrador is seeing in Latin America.
“The policy that the President is carrying out in Latin America is very important, very important. I am enthusiastic regarding what you are doing, you are giving. He is advancing time, because it is obvious that all of Latin America is going to the left. The president is getting ahead of that time to capture and promote sovereign autonomy in Latin America, it is very important that Mexico is in the front row and it is doing so”, he stated.

At the express question, Muñoz Ledo avoided commenting on the 2024 presidential succession and the recent differences between the federal government and the National Electoral Institute (INE) over the mandate revocation consultation.
He asserted that he maintains indirect communication with President López Obrador because “he is very busy.”
“Who would like or who likes you by 2024?” he was asked.
“If it’s not regarding tastes, they are historical processes, they are not anyone’s tastes,” he said.
“Who would you like for this process?” He was insisted.
“They are not to anyone’s taste, they are not tastes, they are historical processes at least it is not a matter of tastes, they are historical processes. And if I told you who I don’t like, I would give you an answer, but it is not a lemon ice cream versus a vanilla ice cream, they are historical processes, of ideological and political convictions, I will give a conference when the opportunity arises, “he said.
He recalled that as then president of the PRI he had to nominate Carlos Pellicer as a senator, “he was looking for personalities in the states that were not professional politicians.”
“He told me ‘I am a socialist Porfirio’ and I told him ‘I am also a teacher’ and go ahead, then he was supported in the campaign in which the president (López Obrador) was in and he made a series of very advanced speeches. When one becomes bigger and sees that injustices are not corrected one becomes radicalized, I am radicalized as you know, as Carlos was, a certain desperation because things do not happen, changes stop, people become poorer and others make them richer,” he asserted.
“Don Porfirio, very briefly, what do you think of these circumstances regarding the INE and the revocation of the mandate, the resources?, he was asked.
“These are topics for another press conference (…) another day, yes, but I am right now in another circuit, we are talking regarding Mr. Carlos Pellicer and if I give you news, then Mr. Carlos has already forgotten us,” he replied.
“I no longer aspire to any popular election position”
Porfirio Muñoz Ledo indicated that he advises the Movimiento Ciudadano (MC) party because “they have asked me for advice on the social democrat, I give it to them, I no longer aspire to any popular election position, you will understand.”
He pointed out that he advises political parties for free, and has even created a foundation that bears his name.
“The day before yesterday I shaped a Foundation that bears my name, they told me why you didn’t want another name, they called it the “Porfirio Muñoz Ledo Foundation” because I am already in the bequest plan and I am open, if you invite and are interested. For example, because of the history of Mexico, a period that I know, years and courses of this, because I also gladly advise”, he added.
