Pope Francis appointed Cardinal Semraro, Dean of the Department for the Causes of Saints, as Special Envoy to celebrate on July 18 the seventh centenary of the canonization of Thomas Aquinas at Fossanova Monastery
A “church man”, priest and apothecary who shared his “immense spiritual and human wisdom” through prayers and writings. Pope Francis once once more recalls the figure of St. Thomas Aquinas in the letter – issued yesterday followingnoon, July 11 – in which he appointed Cardinal Marcello Semraro, Dean of the Department for the Causes of Saints, as his special envoy for the celebration of the seventh centenary of the canonization of Thomas Aquinas, which will take place on July 18 in Fossanova Monastery, in the municipality of Priverno, in the province of Latina. He was never proud of his knowledge, but always appeared as someone moved by love. The Dominican friar, who was called by his contemporaries the “angelic teacher” “Doctor Angelicus,” was “full of a wonderful culture,” stresses the Pope in the letter dated June 30. He wrote many works full of remarkable erudition and taught countless people, acquiring outstanding merits in philosophy and theology. He shone with wit and lucidity, and as he reverently searched or examined divine mysteries with rationality, he contemplated them with fervent faith.
As in the letter addressed to the bishops of Latina, Sora and Frosinone, published last June 28, Pope Francis recalls the three years dedicated to Saint Thomas Aquinas during which, in addition to the seventh centenary of his canonization, the 750th anniversary of his death in 2024 and the centenary His eighth birthday in 2025. “With great joy of soul and joy of soul,” Pope Francis wrote, “we accepted the various projects of the Church to honor worthy of the zeal of His Holiness Doctor and the study of the Holy Doctrine,” and added that he had accepted the request of Bishops Mariano Crociata, pastor of Latina, Terracina, Sizzi, Priverno; Gerardo Antonazzo, Bishop of Sora, Cassino, Aquino, and Pontecorvo; and Ambrogio Spriafico, Bishop of Frosinone, Ferruli, Frentino, and Anannii Alatri, that one of the cardinals preside over the July celebration of St. Thomas Aquinas and deliver “words of spiritual encouragement.” Hence the appointment of Cardinal Semararo, who will celebrate the festive Divine Liturgy in the Monastery of Fossanova, the place where the Lord St. Thomas Aquinas rested. “All those who will take part in this event will be encouraged to show their special love for Christ and his Gospel with renewed vigor and new zeal through prayer,” the Pope writes in the letter, as well as “to impress with fervor in the faith in daily life.”
