(CNN Spanish) — Pope Francis said that he does not want to be buried in the Vatican in an interview given this Tuesday to the Mexican media N+. The highest pontiff, who will turn 87 on Sunday, December 17, pointed out that he wants his remains to rest in the Basilica of Santa María Maggiore, in Rome.

With this decision, Francis becomes the first pope to ask not to be buried in the Holy See in almost 100 years. The last pontiff not to rest in St. Peter’s Basilica is Leo XIII, who died in 1903 and whose remains were transferred in 1924 to the Basilica of St. John Lateran, the cathedral of the diocese of Rome.

In the interview, also cited by Vatican News – the official media of the Holy See – Pope Francis indicated that he has met with the person in charge of preparations for the rites of his funeral. “We simplified them quite a bit,” he noted. Regarding his decision to be buried in the basilica of Santa María La Mayor, he explained: “As I always promised the Virgin. The place is already prepared. (…) It is my great devotion. Before, when I came (to Rome), I always went there on Sunday mornings when I was in Rome, I went there for a while. Yes, there is a very big connection.”

What did Pope Francis say regarding his health?

The pope asked the Catholic faithful to pray for his health. “I need you to pray for my health. And her old age does not make up, it is her alone, she presents herself as she is. And, on the other hand, knowing how to accept the gifts of old age. “You must accept that you can do a lot of good from another perspective.”

After spending several days of rest due to severe bronchitis, which forced him to cancel a planned trip to the COP28 climate summit, the pontiff spoke regarding different topics.

What did Pope Francis say regarding war?

The highest representative of the Catholic Church reiterated his call for peace in both the Ukraine and Gaza conflicts, calling the war “a defeat” and stating that “the only ones who win in the war are the weapons manufacturers.”

Francis stated that he calls the Holy Family parish daily, the only Catholic parish located in Gaza. “Every day I call the parish. They have 600 people there. The priests and the nuns take care of all those people and tell me what is happening there. Horror. What do we gain from the war? Destruction, nothing more than that.”

What did Pope Francis say regarding Javier Milei and Argentina?

Francisco referred to the Argentine president, Javier Milei, who took office on December 10, and who – long before being a presidential candidate – had dedicated epithets to him as “representative of evil on Earth.”

In the interview broadcast this Tuesday, Francisco stated: “We must distinguish a lot between what a politician says in the electoral campaign and what he is really going to do followingwards, because then comes the moment of concreteness, of decisions, of those things. ”.

During his presidential campaign, Milei preferred not to refer to Francisco, of Argentine origin and archbishop of Buenos Aires before becoming Pedro’s successor. But they had a telephone conversation on November 21, two days following Milei won the election in the second round.

Vatican News reported then that the talk was “enjoyable,” and a statement from Milei’s office said the pontiff had called him “to congratulate him and express his wishes for unity and progress.”
