VATICAN CITY (Reuters) – Pope Francis on Sunday urged respect for civilians in conflict zones and said people were tired of wars, which he described as “a disaster for the people and a defeat for humanity.”
After the Angelus prayer in St. Peter’s Square, the Pope called for allowing humanitarian aid to cross into Myanmar, and said that the population in the Middle East, which was affected by the war between Israel and the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), must also be respected. He also pointed to the suffering of the population in Ukraine.
The military in Myanmar, which overthrew an elected government in 2021, is facing a coalition of groups with extensive combat experience seeking to end its control over its regions since late October.
Pope Francis also said that he received “with joy” the news that a group of people, including six nuns, had been released in Haiti regarding a week following they were kidnapped. Last week, he called for their release.
