Vatican City: Pope Francis at Gemelli Hospital in Rome for abdominal surgery. A Vatican spokesman confirmed that the Pope, who was admitted to hospital today (June 07) following a public visit, will undergo surgery today. Surgery was recommended by Papa’s medical team following severe and recurring pain from the hernia.

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said the pope will need to stay in the hospital for several days to recover from the anesthesia-induced surgery. He also said that he will undergo treatment related to the abdominal wall. Papa Gemelli also came to the hospital yesterday (June 6) for a medical examination.

Eighty-six-year-old Papa was admitted to the hospital for four days last March due to a lung infection. In 2021, he underwent colon surgery at Gemelli Hospital. Since the beginning of 2022, Papa has also been suffering from knee pain. However, he was of the opinion that surgery is not necessary to solve this problem.

It was reported that the Pope told Italian bishops in May that he did not want to undergo knee surgery because he did not want to face the consequences of general anesthesia once more for colon surgery in July 2021. But Papa is now admitted to the hospital for a surgery that requires anesthesia.
