Pope Francis renews norms and conditions of Exarchate for Ukrainian Catholics of the Byzantine Rite in Italy

During a personal meeting with Archbishop Claudio Gujerotti, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches on June 23, 2023, Pope Francis asked for the renewal of the norms and conditions of the Exarchate for Ukrainian Catholics of the Byzantine Rite in Italy, established on July 11, 2019, under the Apostolic Bull ‘Christo Salvatori’. and deepening in the Catholic faith, The Pope underlined that the origin of the personal church will be preserved and this will be useful.

Eight different articles are included in this code. The basis is suggestions for more effective preaching of the faith by working with the Latin Church in Italy.

The first article describes the nature of the Exarchate. The Exarchate is created for the people of God who are members of the independent Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and who have a permanent or partial residence in Italy.

The second article states that the Exarchate, who is a member of the Italian Episcopal Council by right, must adhere to the norms and directives governing the Episcopal Council. The following articles outline the communication, coordination and activities to be carried out with the Italian dioceses and bishops in the area where the Exarchate operates.

New directions have also been given for the establishment of individual parishes. When establishing a parish, the opinion of the diocese concerned should be sought and the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches informed.

In order to promote joint, pastoral and charitable work, the priests of the Exarchate should develop a relationship of unity with the priestly community of the diocese in which they exercise their ministry and with the Diocese, as well as mutual cooperation in pastoral ministry.

In the last two articles, priests who are members of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church come to Italy for study purposes and require the approval of the Exarchate to serve in dioceses.
