The Pope said that prayer is a breath of faith and a unique expression.

This exhortation of Pope Francis is contained in the preface to the book entitled “Praying Today” (Pregare oggi) by Cardinal Angelo Comastri, the Pope’s Vicar in Vatican City.

The Pope also notes that it is a silent cry that comes from the hearts of those who believe and trust in God. The Pope says that it is not so easy to find words that can express the mystery of prayer, and although we can collect many definitions of prayer from saints, spiritual teachers and theological reflections, only the simplicity of those who live it can give an explanation.

In his introduction, the Pope indicates that the Lord warns us not to waste words in the illusion that God will listen due to the abundance of words, and that he emphasizes silence.

Reminding that the year 2024 is a time of preparation fully dedicated to prayer, the Pope says that there is a strong need for a great spirituality capable of answering the big questions that arise today.

Socio-economic-ecological crises, wars that cause death, destruction and poverty, the culture of indifference and throw-aways that suffocate aspirations for peace and solidarity, and the tendency to alienate God from personal and social life, the Pope cites as examples of evils. Therefore, the Pope says, it is necessary to rise up in prayer more and more constantly to God the Father.
