He Pope Francisco recounted in the forum of the third edition of “The General States of Birth” that scolded a woman who treated her pet like her son and asked her to bless them.

In the conference held this Friday, where the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, also participated, the Pope emphasized and expressed his concern regarding the cultural change that prioritizes pets over children.

“I think that the birth rate is central to everyone, especially for the future of Italy and Europe,” he said.

In this context, he gave an example of two situations that happened in the Plaza de San Pedro:

“Two weeks ago, my secretary was in the Plaza and a mother approached with a stroller. He, a tender priest, came over to bless the baby… it was a puppy”.

“Fifteen days ago, at the General Audience on Wednesday, I was greeting a lady in her fifties, like me, more or less (generating laughter and applause in the audience). She opened her bag and said, ‘Could you bless my baby?’ It was a puppy!” remembered.

“I lost patience and scolded the lady,” he acknowledged and claimed that he told her: “Madam, many children are hungry and you have a dog.”

After recounting both episodes, Francisco expressed his concern that it will become a “habit in the future” that families opt for pets over children.

Sayings that are similar to those that he had already raised in 2022. On that occasion he said: “Today we see a form of selfishness. We see that some do not want to have children. Sometimes they have one, and that’s it, but instead, they have dogs and cats that occupy that place.
