Pope Francis cuts benefits to cardinals and administrators of the Holy See

The news agency Archyde.com and the Vatican News reported that cardinals and people of high ranksuch as presidents, secretaries, undersecretaries, among others, they will not be able to continue living for free or with benefits in apartments that belong to or are connected to the Vatican. This measure of Pope Francisco seeks to save money from the Holy See.

The Church owns a large number of properties that are inside and outside the Vatican. These places are managed by the Heritage Administration of the Apostolic See (APSA).

Pope Francis’ decision was communicated through a note from the Vatican Secretary for the Economy, Maximino Caballero Ledo. The note known as rewritten from the audience seeks to cut housing benefits for certain officials in order to meet the needs that the Church presents in the current economic context.

In March 2021, the Pope had decided to cut cardinals’ salaries by 10%. Also, the salaries of other officials by 8%. Some clergy even suffered a 3% reduction. Raises to some administrators were also suspended for at least two years.
